Two winters ago, Hailey, now 11, decided she wanted to try skiing. Her father has skied for most of his life, but she was always hesitant to try. So, when she finally said she wanted to, we were excited for her, but weren't really sure where to start as far as gear went. Without much thought, my husband just ended up renting gear at the mountain. Add that to the price of the lift ticket and it was a crazy expensive adventure! She did great, but we weren't really looking forward to paying that price again! It was an expensive beginner season (thank goodness she started later in the winter). So, last year, when she was ready for more lessons and more days on the slopes, we had to figure out something different.
Fortunately for us, Rodgers Ski & Sport is right here in Scarborough, so we popped in to see about their lease program. We were immediately impressed by the customer service; everyone who worked there was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, not to mention kind to Hailey, who was excited but a little nervous about her first full season as a skier. They sized her for boots and skis, explaining the whole process along the way. Once she left, snazzy skis and boots in hand, she couldn't wait to have a formal lesson and get on the slopes with her dad. For only $119, Hailey had a quality set of skis, bindings and boots until the very end of the season, when we returned them, but kept the memories. She learned so much last year and thoroughly enjoyed her ski time. The Rodgers Ski & Sport Lease Package was absolutely perfect for her. And any time we had any questions or issues, Rodgers was on top of it.
Naturally, this year, we knew we would be using the Rodgers Ski & Sport Lease Program again. I can't imagine spending money at the mountain every time she skis or, an even more mind-blowing thought, buying skis, bindings and boots. She grows so fast! We'd be buying a new set of skis every single winter! Add in to the equation that Hailey's sister, Lila, 8, finally decided she wanted to try skiing this year, too, and we definitely knew we'd be at Rodgers for both girls. Again we encountered superb customer service from knowledgeable and friendly staff. The girls were thrilled with their skis and boots and couldn't wait to get started. Even the rain at the mountain couldn't dampen the girls' spirits when they went out for their first run this year. Hailey was super excited to start using poles and Lila was an absolute trouper through all the new learning curves. Needless to say, Rodgers Ski & Sport will have a place in our family's skiing memories for a very long time to come. (Note: In case you are wondering, I don't ski. I snowshoe, then relax in the lodge and read a book. Hey, at least we're still together as a family!)
A little about Rodgers:
Rodgers Ski & Sport, originally known as Rodgers Ski Outlet, opened for business in the summer of 1985. During the first several weeks, business was slow. In fact, while Dale and his wife were moving into the apartment upstairs, the first customer finally walked in and purchased a t-shirt! With this first memorable sale almost 34 years ago, Rodgers was on its way to becoming an established local business that provides happy customers with great deals for biking and skiing while offering the service that brings everyone back year after year.
Dale Rodgers, owner/manager, was born in the White Mountains of N.H. back when straight skis and buckle boots were almost new inventions! He went on to be an asset to his Linwood High School ski team in Lincoln, NH (home of Loon Mtn. ski area) competing in giant slalom, slalom, as well as ski jumping. A passionate and skilled skier, he jumped at the opportunity presented to him by his brother to open a second ski shop in Scarborough, the same year he married his college sweetheart. Dale is the biggest asset to the ski shop, with his contagious laugh, down-home, friendly and caring personality, and an incredible memory for names and people. He has surrounded himself with others who reflect this work ethic, creating the knowledgeable, friendly and caring environment that all customers encounter as soon as they walk through the door.
Rodgers is a family-owned and operated business, with Dale, his wife, his three sons and daughter-in-law all having some part in helping out. His brother, David, owns, and continues to operate, the original shop located in Lincoln, N.H.
So come on by to check out Rodgers Ski & Sport, and meet the friendly, knowledgeable and caring staff. You'll be sure to find great prices and selection.
